Outline

Lecture

For long developments in assessment have been dominated by the search for the optimal instrument to test medical competence. As such the main purpose of tests has been to distinguish the competent from the non-competent students. In educational settings, however, a more important goal may be to diagnose how a particular student can become more competent. For this a programme of assessment is more suitable than a single instrument. In this presentation the case for such a programmatic approach will be made.
