Purpose: To analyze injuries sustained during active sport.

Material and Methods: Analyzing 14 788 cases in the United States Eye Injury Registry (http://www.useironline.org/) database. Seven percent (1075) of serious trauma cases were caused by sports. Results: The most important ones were baseball (23%), fishing (17%), and softball (11%). Almost half of the patients were under 20 years of age and 79% are males. The male:female ratio showed great variability: 20x in basketball but only 1.2x in softball. The 3rd quarter saw the highest number of injuries (37%, the 4th the fewest (15%). Only 10% of injuries occurred via nonorganized sports activities. Open globe trauma resulted in 13%, but the rate reached 44% among fishing injuries. Retinal detachment was diagnosed in 6% of eyes. Three or more surgeries were needed in 6% of eyes.

Conclusion: Serious trauma is not uncommon among those participating in sport. Mostly boys get injured and mostly during organized sport; these findings should help preventive efforts. The most serious injuries are caused by fishing accidents.
