Call for manuscripts for the special issue "How do students and trainees in the healthcare professions learn? - Basics, methods and perspectives for research on training, studies and didactics in the health professions" of GMS Journal for Medical Education

Dear colleagues,

Our research on training, studies and didactics in the health professions aims to systematically and methodically understand and document how students learn to shape the design of teaching and learning environments. Above that, current and upcoming social trends and the organisational context of teaching and learning environments need to be understood and considered. The challenge lies in systematically identifying the research objective and consciously deciding on the best methodological approach. To stimulate our curiosity and creativity, which is at the heart of every research project, the GMA special interest group "Methodology in Educational Research" invites you to engage in reflection on practice in educational research and submit manuscripts on the following three topics:

  1. Fundamentals in research on training, studies and didactics in the healthcare professions
This topic’s articles present empirically tested theories on learning and discuss their (potential) application in educational research. Furthermore, this topic includes review articles on basic research findings relevant to the design of teaching-learning environments, discussing the practical application of the findings to the design of teaching-learning environments and the need for further research.
Article types: Review articles (systemic reviews or scoping reviews) in accordance with the PRISMA (http://www.prisma-statement.org/PRISMAStatement/PRISMAStatement) or PRISMA-ScR (http://www.prisma-statement.org/Extensions/ScopingReviews) guidelines.
  2. Methods for research on training, studies and didactics in the health professions
The articles in this topic introduce research methods or research approaches that address typical research objectives in health professions education and discuss how data can be collected and analysed to address these objectives.
Article types: "How to ...?" (additionally, where appropriate, original research manuscripts addressing a research method)
  3. Perspectives on research on training, studies and didactics in the health professions
This topic comprises articles that take a critical look at research on training, studies and didactics in the healthcare professions and provide suggestions for the advancement of research practice.
Article types: Commentaries, letters to the editor

The submission deadline for manuscripts for the special issue is 15 July 2024.

Manuscripts can either be submitted via the MOPS (Manuscript Operating System https://www.rheinware.org/mops/) or sent directly to the editorial office as a Word file (kontakt@gma-dach.org). When submitting your manuscript, please indicate its allocation to the special issue "Research in Medical and Health Profession Education". Please follow the author guidelines (https://www.egms.de/en/journals/zma/authors.htm).

All manuscripts are subject to the regular review process and are assessed by at least two independent reviewers and by the editors of the special issue. Articles that, in the opinion of the editors, are not suitable for this special issue may be considered for publishing in another issue of GMS Journal for Medical Education, if passing the regular review process. If you are not sure whether a planned contribution fits thematically, please contact the editors of the special issue in advance. The final decision on acceptance of a manuscript lies with the journal’s Chief Editor and Assistant Chief Editor.

We look forward to your contributions.
Yours sincerely, for the SIG "Methodology in Educational Research"
Katrin Schüttpelz-Brauns, Michaela Wagner-Menghin and Jan Matthes
