Outline

Text

Summary: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of loss of smell as regards the quality of life in Romanian patients with rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis, before and after surgery, all the patients had olfactory impairment, subjective anosmia and hyposmia, assessed for QoL by using the Questionnaire for Olfactory Dysfunction (QOD) and they were tested with the “Sniffin’ Stick battery Test” only for odor identification (OI) and odor threshold (OT).

The study tried to identify the patients with an improvement on odor identification and odor threshold or a persistent loss of smell after FESS for nasal polyposis and the impact on the quality of life in these patients after 4 weeks respectively 6 months.

Materials and methods:

Participants – Ethics

The study includes 35 patients (age range 18 – 60 years) who came to our ENT Clinic between October 2010 and October 2011 and they were operated on with diagnosis of pure nasal polyps with routine ear, nose and throat physical examination and endoscopic exam, all the patients respected the inclusion and the exclusion criteria. The patients were evaluated before and after surgery with the Sniffin’Sticks Extended Test validated in the Romanian population, QOD questionnaire and then on the 4th week and 6th month as the olfactory disorders scores and quality of life.

The care of the human subjects for this study was approved by the local Institutional Review Board.

Results: We determined improvement in some patients regarding the quality of life and the olfactory impairment at 4 weeks and 6 months after surgery but also a persistent olfactory impairment before surgery (p<0.05).
