Objective: To improve the level of diagnosis and treatment of parapharyngeal space (PPS) tumors
Methods: This study retrospected 76 patients with parapharyngeal space tumors, all received surgery from 1990 to 2011 .The data included symptoms and surgical approach and pathological results.
Results: The common symptoms of parapharyngeal space tumors were asymptomatic(42/76), dyspnea(1/76) ,haematemesis(1/76) and pharyngeal symptoms (32/76 ) contained dysphagia, foreign body sensation and pain. The surgical approach included transcervical approach in 44 cases, transoral’s in 8 cases, combined transcervical and jaw’s in 13 cases and transparotid’s in 8 cases. 10 cases had tracheotomy. The last pathological results shows that the origin of these tumors was salivary account for 19/76, neurogenic for 44/76 and others for 13/76
Conclusion: Parapharyngeal space (PPS) tumors are difficult to diagnose because they have few symptoms and are surgically inaccessible. The commonest pathological examinations were neurogenic neoplasm and tanscervical approach was widely used.
