From Apr.1997 to Dec. 2008,there were 295 cases with laryngeal carcinomas who were operated in our Hospital, in the 295 cases there were 40 cases who had accepted a partial laryngectomy and the laryngeal function was reconstructed using epiglottis with without other materials. In those patients, there were 3 supraglottic cancers, 34 glottic cancers and 3 subglottic cancers. Among them, 1 case had stage Tis lesions, 8 cases had stage T1 lesions, 16 cases had stage T2 lesions and 15 cases had stage T3 lesions. 40 cases were clinically followed up the oncologic and functional results were retrospectively analysed. Calculated the 3-5 years tumor-free survival rates using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and evaluated the rehabilitation of laryngeal function. Using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, the 3-5 years tumor-free survival rates were 82.9%~75.7% respectively. All of the patients with supraglottic carcinoma were tumor-free survival, in the 3 cases with subglottic carcinomas, only 1 case was still tumor-free survival for five years. In the 34 cases with glottic carcinomas, 6 cases were dead, and 1 case with local recurrence had to accept a total laryngectomy. The reason of the death was local and nodal recurrence or pneumonic metastasis. On the premise of complete tumor excision, we conducted a partial laryngectomy using epiglottis with or without other materials to reconstruct the lesion of foresid with, both Oncologic and functional results. Using epiglottis with or without other materials to reconstruct laryngeal function after partial laryngectomy is a alternative to total laryngectomy in laryngeal cancers specially in selected advanced cases which improves the quality of life nd epiglottis is one of the ideal materials in laryngoplasty after partial laryngectomy.
