Background: Digital innovations are increasingly being used in healthcare, for example in breast cancer care and aftercare, to improve patient-related outcomes and efficiently organize care processes. We will conduct a systematic review to analyse what perceived benefits and disadvantages digital health technologies in breast cancer care have for healthcare providers (HCPs).
Objective: The systematic review aims to answer the following questions:
What perceived benefits and disadvantages do HCPs see when using digital health technologies in breast cancer care?
Sub-question: What contextual factors influence the use of digital health technologies by HCPs’ in breast cancer care?
Sub-question: How are benefits and disadvantages assessed and operationalized?
Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across PubMed, IEEE Xplore and PsycInfo using a peer-reviewed search strategy. Studies describing the advantages and disadvantages of digital health technologies in breast cancer care with a focus on HCPs perspectives will be included. For qualitative studies, we will use thematic synthesis to extract and summarize the results. If quantitative studies are included, the results and thematic complexes described in the results section are analysed in the thematic synthesis. The quality assessment of the included studies will be carried out using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool, which facilitates the evaluation of various study types. The review is registered on PROSPERO: CRD42024508808.
Results: A search string was defined and applied to the databases. The search returned 657 records. The 625 articles that remained after excluding duplicates are currently screened for eligibility. At the time of the congress, the results of the thematic synthesis will be available.
Implication for research and/or (healthcare) practice: With this review, healthcare decision makers can gain comprehensive insights, which may help them make informed decisions about the adoption of digital health technologies.
