Outline

Text

Background: Evaluating one’s own work is important for professional development. An evaluation should also be carried out from women’s perspective, as they are the users of the services. There are some scales for measuring satisfaction, but there are several problems, such as the influence of womens’ expectations [1]. Quality, on the other hand, is defined as the extent to which a goal is achieved [2]. Measuring quality from a women’s perspective could therefore be more useful. There is no instrument for measuring quality that is validated and theoretically based yet [1].

Aim/Research Question: Development of a scale to measure the quality of midwifery care during birth and postpartum from a womens’ point of view.

Methods:

1.
Identification of aims and objectives of midwifery
2.
Item development
3.
Pre-Test (n=16)
4.
Explorative Factor Analysis (EFA) (n=133)
5.
Confirmative Factor Analysis (CFA) and testing of psychometric properties (n=1783)
6.
Expert interviews and a workshop with midwives on the possibility of implementation in the german health care system

The study was funded by the Landeszentrum für Gesundheit, NRW (Part of the state health system).

For the CFA, data collected in 2018 within the framework of the HebAB.NRW study with financial support from the Landeszentrum Gesundheit NRW were used. A vote on ethics was obtained.

Results: EFA with varimax suggested a 23-item scale with three components for the birth-questionair: Trustful Relationship (α=.91), Orientation & Security (α=.91) and Personal Control (α=.82). The results of the CFA are currently being analyzed and will be presented at the conference.

Relevance: It is very important and possible to evaluate midwife support from a women’s perspective. The relevance depends on the use in practice.

Recommendations/Conclusion: The next step would be to apply and evaluate quality measurement from the perspective of women in practice.

Ethics and conflicts of interest: There was an ethical clearing by the ethics commission of the Hochschule für Gesundheit, University of Applied Sciences. The research was supported by external funding. There are no conflicts of interest.
