Outline

Editorial

After numerous discussions within the board of the German Society for Audiology (DGA, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Audiologie) and with the Median publishing house, the time has finally come: GMS Zeitschrift für Audiologie – Audiological Acoustics is “online”. The scientific original contributions will be available to interested readers shortly after the successful completion of the review process. All publications receive a “Digital Object Identifier” (DOI) and are available open access under the “Creative Commons” terms via https://www.egms.de. In print, the articles will be published in Zeitschrift für Audiologie (Median-Verlag, Heidelberg) in the following quarter – as far as sufficient space is at the disposal.

Through the implementation of the GMS Zeitschrift für Audiologie – Audiological Acoustics, the visibility of the scientific contributions in the journal will increase significantly and will meet today's usual requirements. With the separation of the scientific publications from the non-scientific releases, the possibility to achieve an indexing of the GMS Zeitschrift für Audiologie – Audiological Acoustics at PubMed appears to be possible in the longer term.

We assume that GMS Zeitschrift für Audiologie – Audiological Acoustics is attractive to potential authors due to the open access to their scientific contributions. The availability of the original scientific papers in open-access is of great interest to all members of the DGA. In competition with the major journals in our field of expertise, free provision of the articles, worldwide availability, and indexing in the established search engines are very relevant.

The transition will significantly speed up and simplify the review process for scientific papers. Until now, an Internet-based editorial management system (EMS) has not been available. In the future, the GMS manuscript operating system (MOPS), which structures the review process and the entire process up to publication, will be used.

Furthermore, all original scientific papers published in print in 2018 are now available open access. They can be found in the PUBLISSO Repository for Life Sciences and can be retrieved through the archive of GMS Zeitschrift für Audiologie – Audiological Acoustics. Within an initially limited introductory phase, open access publication will be free of charge for authors who are members of the DGA (first or last author). In view of the high fees of other journals, GMS Zeitschrift für Audiologie – Audiological Acoustics undoubtedly presents a very inviting offer!

The introduction of the new system will create additional costs for the DGA and may not be an easy task. Therefore, the editorial office would like to ask for some leniency in the changeover phase. We would like to thank the Median publishing house and the board of the DGA for their support, as well as the employees of GMS for their help with the implementation of the project!
