About GMS Interdisciplinary Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery DGPW
Concept
GMS Interdisciplinary Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery DGPW is a journal published by German Medical Science (GMS), the portal of the Association of Scientific Medical Societies (AWMF) in Germany. Edited by the German Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (DGPW) and published in co-operation with the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) and ZB MED – Information Centre for Life Sciences, GMS Interdisciplinary Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery DGPW offers open access to high-ranking and peer-reviewed papers in the area of plastic and reconstructive surgery in its broadest sense.
According to the interdisciplinary nature of the German Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (DGPW) papers dealing with interdisciplinary treatment concepts, new surgical methods, fundamental research and quality management in surgery will be preferred. For tutorial reasons review articles are also published.
In addition to speed of publication and accessibility GMS Interdisciplinary Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery DGPW will exploit the vast opportunities of electronic media. It is possible to enrich the published articles by the attachment of high resolution images, extensive tables, voice and movie recordings and to publish the underlying data. Document-based alternatives to impact factors will also be possible.
GMS Interdisciplinary Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery DGPW is listed in PubMed and its articles are deposited in the PubMed Central repository. The journal is also covered by the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) of the Web of Science, since 2023 it has a Journal Impact Factor.

Peer review process
The review process aims to ensure that only high-quality scientific and innovative manuscripts will be published, which provide new and interesting information to the readers. The process is based on a form of peer review, whereby the submitted manuscript is assessed by experts, who are well versed in the relevant field. The experts remain anonymous towards the author, but also towards each other.
For the review there is an online form available for detailed criticism and modification requests for the manuscript. The author receives these comments in an anonymous form. The review closes with a classification of the work into one out of four categories:
- Accepted in the present form
- Revision necessary
- Rejected, resubmission possible
- Rejected
If the assessments of both reviewers lead to a result which indicates the first or second category, the procedure follows the results, as long as the editor-in-chief do not have any fundamental reservations. The work will be accepted for publishing, when the expectations of the reviewers and the editor are fulfilled.
If the manuscript is rejected unanimously by the reviewers, the authors will receive a rejection message with the detailed comments of the reviewers, in order to make the reasons of the rejection transparent. The editor-in-chief reserves the right to modify the procedure.
In case of substantially differing reviews, i.e. if only one of the experts speaks for the acceptance, then a third review will be obtained. Taking the editor’s opinion into account a decision is made.
The overall goal of all efforts is to make the review of scientific submissions for GMS Interdisciplinary Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery DGPW as transparent as possible and as critical as necessary.
