Introduction: Complications of inflammatory processes are the main cause of death in ENT patients.
Study objective: Specific characteristics, and complications of ЕNT-diseases in modern clinic.
Subjects and methods: 60 in patient medical records of patients with intracranial complications of EN-processes were eraluated. Time period is since 1995 to 2010.
Results: The majority of intracranial complications had otogenic origin (n=46, 76%). One third of patients (n=18, 29,8%) died. According to our data, the main cause of complications and death (n=12, 64,7%) was otitis media with effusion.
These patients did not show classic clinical manifestation of inflammation. Only 29,8% of patients had pain, and 36,2% of patients had purulent discharge.
Surgical interventions showed that the majority of patients had chronic process with significant anatomical destructions of structures of middle ear in spite of acute manifestation of the disease.
Conclusion: Otitis media is the leading cause of intracranial complications. Morphological manifestations of the disease in spite of the discrepancy with clinical course confirm the chronic character of the process in the middle ear.
