Purpose: The aim of our study was to investigate which aspects are of particular interest when trying to predict students’ satisfaction with digital teaching. Additionaly we examined whether evaluations of digital teaching changed over the first three semesters during COVID-19 pandemic. Hypotheses about satisfaction with digital teaching in medicine and ideas for further studies to improve digital teaching should be generated.

Methods: A questionnaire about satisfaction with digital teaching and different aspects of digital teaching was developed and used from June 2020-July 2021 to assess N=234 medicine students participating in the course “gynecology and obstetrics” at University of Heidelberg. Explorative and investigative analyses like multiple regression analyses and extrem group comparasions were conducted. Decriptive findings were validated with inferential statistics.

Results: Especially the aspects content-related quality of teaching, organization of teaching and subjective learning success played an important role to predict overall satisfaction with courses, whereas fears and changes due to the pandemic situation, technical quality of teaching, interactions with teachers and students and advantages of web-based learning played a subordinate role. Nevertheless, there were significant differences for all of these aspects between students with high versus low overall satisfaction with courses revealing a remarkable group of students which seemed to have problems with digital teaching during COVID-19 pandemic. Despite disadvantages of digital teaching, also advantages of digital teaching were found. A majority of students desired certain digital offers in the future. Differences of results between the summer semester 2020, the winter semester 2021 and the summer semester 2021 were quite small.

Discussion: Results should be interpreted reminding the explorative design and that data were collected during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless our results give several hints about what should be of special attention when trying to improve digital teaching in medicine. Further studies should be done to investigate specific interventions for better digital teaching buildung up on our results. This seems to be important, because many students wished digital elements of teaching in the future and satisfaction with coures is important for learning success [1].

Additionally, our results can be used to generate hypotheses that adress the huge differences between medicine students regarding their satisfaction with digital teaching.

Take home messages: Digital teaching in medicine will remain important. Further studies should be done trying to improve students satisfaction with courses. Our results suggest that especially the aspects content-related quality of teaching, organization of teaching and subjective learning success are promising starting points to improve digital teaching in medicine.
