Objective

To investigate changes in retinal morphology after photodynamic therapy (PDT) by means of optical coherence tomography (OCT) and Heidelberg retinal topography (HRT).

Methods

Forty patients with predominantly classic choroidal neovascularization (CNV) due to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) were tested for visual acuity and examined by OCT, HRT macular module and fluorescein angiography (FLA) before as well as 6 and 12 weeks after PDT. The change in foveal thickness measured by OCT in 9 fields was compared to the change in edema index obtained by HRT in 9 fields. Results were also correlated with visual acuity and leakage determined by FLA.

Results

The change in foveal thickness measured by OCT did not correlate with the change in edema index given by HRT in any of the 9 fields. The presence of leakage and changes in visual acuity were independent from foveal thickness and edema index at all visits.

Conclusions

At this time, 9-field edema map by HRT and 9-field retinal map by OCT cannot replace evaluation of CNV by fluorescein angiography.
