Purpose: Evaluation of effectiveness of transperineal permanent seedimplantation (TPSI) in 112 patients with “low risk” prostate cancer.
Patients/Methods: From 04/1999 – 05/2002 112 patients underwent a mono TPSI using pre-, online and CT-plan procedures. Patients were monitored during the first year in 3 month intervals and from the 2.-5. year six monthly. Criteria for tumor relapse were 3 consecutive PSA rises (ASTRO criteria).
Results: 4 patients were lost to follow up, 108 patients were eligible. After a median follow up of 48.2 (37.0-76.7) months 102 patients had a biochemical free survival (bNED). In 6 patients (5.6%) a PSA relapse occurred (local recurrence: 3, systemic disease: 3). In the bNED-patients PSA values were <0.2 ng/ml in 85/102 (81,7%), <0.5 ng/ml in 99/102 (97,1%) and <1.0 ng/ml in 100/102 (98.0%) patients, respectively. 2/102 (2.0%) of patients have stable PSA values <1.5 ng/ml.
Conclusions: Crucial selection of patients and high quality assurance lead to excellent results after TPSI.
