In this study, 4 mannose(Man)- and two N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc)n-specific plant agglutinins (lectins) were evaluated for their antiviral activity against the SARS coronavirus (SARS CoV) Frankfurt 1 strain in vitro. The mannose-specific agglutinins from the orchid species Cymbidium hybrid (CA) and Listera ovata (LOA), the mannose-specific agglutinins from Hippeastrum hybrid (Amaryllis, HHA) and Morus Nigra (black mulberry tree, MornigaM) were highly inhibitory to SARS CoV in Vero E6 cells. Also, (GlcNAc)n-specific agglutinins from Urtica dioica (stinging nettle, UDA) and Nicotian tabacum (Tabacco plant, Nictaba) were inhibitory to SARS CoV. [Tab. 1]
