Purpose: To histopathologically evaluate the macular pucker (MP) in traumatized eyes as compared to idiopathic MP.
Methods: The ultrastructurally and immunohistochemically studied MP specimens that were intentionally peeled from ten eyes with traumatic MP (T group), and ten with idiopathic MP (I group). They compared ultrastructural and immunohistochemical findings between the two groups. Include ILM.-H-E, Masson Tricromic, P.A.S. and GFPA , vimentine, Prot. S-100, enolasa neuron specific , factor VIII and CD68 by IHQ.
Results: A larger amount of cellular elements was observed on the vitreous side of the traumatic MP in the T group. The thickness of the MP in the traumatic group was significantly increased (mean 7.9 +/- 1.6 micro) compared with that in the I group (1.8 +/- 0.6 micro) (P < 0.0001). Immunoreactions for Muscle-specific Actin, Factor VIII, CD 68, GFPA and Vimentin in the T group were more abundant in the I group.
Conclusion: The traumatic macular pucker thickening and cell abundance on the vitreous surface might contribute to the course and the pathogenesis of the disease.
