Amplification of chromosomal region 3q26-28 is a common event in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. We applied a real time PCR to evaluate gene expression of several candidate oncogenes harbouring 3q26-28 in tumor samples as well as in histologically normal tissue samples nearby the tumor margin. It has been detected an overexpression of particular genes (PIK3CA, SSCRO and others) in tumor surrounding samples which might play a crucial role in early stages of cancerogenesis and tumor progression.
