Hypothesis: The goal of this study was to analyze hearing results after implantation of Bulgarian PORP and TORP from Ceromer.

Study design: We conducted a prospective review of 16 patients undergo primary or secondary middle ear operations performed between August 2003 and August 2004.

Methods: PORP and TORP from Ceromer were inserted for different anatomic or pathologic situations in the operated middle ear in 16 patients. Pure-tone audiometry for bone and air conduction threshold was performed in all the patients. Hearing tests were carried out before and 45 days and 3 months after the operation.

Results: The average preoperative air-bone gap in all operations was 45 dB, whereas the mean postoperative gap was 15 dB hearing loss for TORP and 20 dB for PORP. The air-bone gap to within 10 dB was achieved in 75% of patients.

Conclusions: The results by surgery of cholesteatoma suggest that TORP in comparison with PORP was better audiological outcome in ossiculoplasty. The hearing results with prostheses composed of a ceromer are good and comparable to the results of authors using other synthetic ossicular prostheses. These prostheses are timesaving because it can be quickly cut and shortened to an individual length. The price of the prosthesis is extremely low, what is an important advantage for popular application in our country. In the future, longer follow-up and increased patient numbers will strengthen our conclusions.
