Objective
To investigate histological features of lacrimal mucosa in chronic dacryocystitis, and to precise the interest of histological examination following dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR).
Methods
We compare histological findings from cadaver dissections and from living patients undergoing DCR in various conditions, using standard histology and electron microscopy.
Results
Chronic dacryocystitis induces rarifaction of goblet cells, metaplasia of mucosa and inflammatory deposits in the stroma. The role of the Mucosa Associated Lymphoid Tissue is discussed. Dacryolithiasis are found in up to 11% of dacryocystorhinostomy pieces. Differential diagnosis with tumors of the lacrimal apparatus are discussed.
Conclusions
Histological examination of lacrimal mucosa after DCR should be promoted as a way to evaluate the quality of lacrimal mucosa, and to disclose dacryolithiasis or malignant tumors of the lacrimal apparatus.
