Objective
A simple laminectomy especially in more levels may result a spinal deformity. Therefore the technique of multi-level laminoplasty is wellknown. We want to report the advantages of using titanium miniplates in these special cases.
Methods
In the last years we used in 12 patients (3 female, 9 male, in average 31 years old, range 8 – 63 years old) titanium miniplates in more than one level laminoplasty, in 9 patients because of tumors (3 neurinomas, 5 ependymomas, 1 ganglioneuroma) and in 3 because of tethered cord with lipoma. The laminoplasty was done in 6 patients in 2 levels, in 4 patients in 3 levels and in 2 in 4 levels.
Results
Average follow-up is 4.5 years (median 4.5, range 4 – 7 years). Most (6 cases) were done in the lumbar spine. Only one was done in the middle thoracic spine. In every case we did CT and MRI-scans after 3 months or/and 6 months. Every cut vertebral arch has refused after 6 months. No plate or screw or arch is dislocated till now. Because of the very low artefacts in MRI a trustful follow-up for tumor relapse could be done.
Conclusions
Laminoplasty with titanium miniplates even in multi-level surgery is, for the whole spine, a useful and safe technique.
