Welcome Address of the Presidents of the French and German Societies of Neurosurgery

Dear collegues,

We are happy to welcome you for this simultaneous congress of our societies of neurosurgery, Neurochirurgie 2005, held in Strasbourg, capital of Europe. This project, conceived at the beginning of the 2000’s, has been built step by step due to the willing and efforts of several members of our respective boards, leading to this important meeting for the improvement of contacts between our two societies.
We will be able to get together to improve our mutual knowledge, exchange scientific informations, and also tighten friendship links that unit us for a long time.
The board of our respective societies have given to Daniel Maitrot who welcomes us in his city and Josef Zentner, his close neighbour from Freiburg im Breisgau, the task of organising all the aspects of this meeting.
We are sure that everyone will keep a very pleasant souvenir of his attendance to Neurochirurgie 2005 and will be very glad about being there.

We wish a good congress to every one.

Pr Bernard Irthum
President of SFNC
Pr Dietmar Stolke
President of DGNC

Dear Colleagues,

for the first joint annual meeting of the French and the German Societies of Neurosurgery a variety of topics has been chosen equally important to either of the two societies, furthermore to facilitate the scientific exchange. A total of 558 papers from the German as well as 76 from the French side have been submitted in time for oral, video or poster presentation, showing the tremendous interest in this upcoming event. With respect to the limited schedule offering adequate space for the joint sessions, invited and state-of-the-art survey lectures, 237 submissions have been accepted as oral presentation in German, 36 in French. In addition, 227 submissions have been accepted as poster presentations in English.

According to the concept of a joint meeting, special emphasis has been placed on the common scientific sessions covering the most important topics. To strengthen this joint aspect provision is made for having the state-of-the-art survey lectures at the beginning of each session also in the English language. Aside, each society has organised a scientific programme in its respective language. This is supplemented with a wide variety of workshops, hands-on-courses and morning seminars created again in a joint fashion. The accompanying commercial exhibition will give opportunity to companies of both countries to present their products.

We hope that this first joint annual meeting of the French and German Societies of Neurosurgery will contribute to an intensified exchange and more and closer personal contacts, last but not least to refer the need for harmonised neurosurgical training on the European level. for this event, no city is more suitable than Strasbourg, a city at the border of both countries which benefited from both German and French influences and yet remained Alsatian.

Closing, we would like to thank the programme committee and the organising committee for the critical review and arrangement of the submitted abstracts.
