GMS Hygiene and Infection Control ist ein frei zugängliches E-Journal. Es veröffentlicht Originalartikel und Übersichtsarbeiten aus Theorie und Praxis der Krankenhaushygiene im Bereich der Grundlagen- und Anwendungsforschung. Die Erscheinungshäufigkeit wird von der Anzahl der eingereichten Beiträge bestimmt, ist jedoch mindestens jährlich vorgesehen. Die Inhalte werden von den eingereichten Beiträgen bestimmt. Sofern es sich anbietet, werden Ausgaben einem zusammenhängenden Thema gewidmet und tragen in diesem Fall den Charakter eines Fortschrittberichts. In diesem Fall wird das jeweilige Themenheft interdisziplinär von ExpertenInnen unterschiedlicher Fachdisziplinen zu einer Synopse zusammengeführt, wobei durch die elektronische Publikation keine Beschränkung in Bezug auf das Bildmaterial erforderlich ist.
Das interdisziplinäre Publikationsorgan wird von der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Krankenhaushygiene (DGKH) herausgegeben, wobei themenabhängig eine Zusammenarbeit mit weiteren wissenschaftlich-medizinischen Fachgesellschaften möglich ist. Bis 2012 wurde die Zeitschrift unter dem Namen GMS Krankenhaushygiene Interdisziplinär veröffentlicht.
Das Journal bietet ExpertenInnen auf dem Gebiet der Krankenhaushygiene die Gelegenheit, ihre Forschungsergebnisse online zu publizieren. Nur qualitativ hochwertige Beiträge werden nach einem konsequenten peer-review-Verfahren zur Veröffentlichung angenommen.
Die Ausgaben werden auf Englisch publiziert und durch eine deutschsprachige Zusammenfassung ergänzt. Sie sind für alle Interessierten aktuell, dauerhaft und kostenlos verfügbar.
