Purpose: To evaluate visual and anatomical outcomes shortly after mechanical eye injuries.

Setting: Department of Ophthalmology, Comenius University School of Medicine, Bratislava, Slovak Republic

Material and Methods: In this study will be evaluated 115 patients (98 male, 17 female, aged 10–83 years) with mechanical eye injury treated in the Department in years 2005–2007. We treated 25 eyes with contusion of the globe, 5 eyes with lamelar laceration, 26 eyes with penetrating injury, 25 eyes with IOFB, 2 eyes with perforating injury and 32 eyes with globe rupture. It was evaluated: initial visual acuity, anatomical pathological changes caused by injury, functional and anatomical results at patients release from hospital.

Results: Early functional and anatomical results. Visual acuity better than 5/10 was achieved in 40% of eyes with globe contusion and penetrating injury, 32% of eye with an IOFB and only in one patient with globe rupture. Without light perception left the hospital 28% of patients with globe rupture. The wrongest early anatomical results were achieved in thepatients with globe rupture.

Conclusion: Traumatic mechanical damage of the eye can result in serious morphological and functional consequences on the eye tissue structures. Thorough examination and appropriate surgical approach are essential for successful final result. Using proper diagnostic and surgical procedures it is possible to save many eyes and maintain their useful function.
