Objective

To evaluate and compare long and medium term postoperative changes of the refraction after cataract surgery in case of non-angulated single-piece IOL implant in comparison with other foldable IOLs (10° angulated three-pieces IOL).

Methods

A retrospective and comparative study of 200 cases operated on by a single surgeon from January 2005 to January 2006. The first group included 100 patients with non-angulated single-piece IOL implant while the second group (the control group) included 100 patients with cataract who benefited of other types of foldable IOLs (10° angulated three-pieces IOL). In order to measure the refraction changes, all the patients have been biometric assessed. All the measurements (pre and postoperative) were performed by the same person.

Results

The postoperative refraction measurements after the first and the third month showed that most of the patients from the first group who benefited of single-piece IOL implant presented changes of the refraction (myopisation with almost -1D), compared to the control group who benefited of other types of foldable IOLs implant.

Conclusions

The use of non-angulated single-piece IOL implant induced medium and long-term postoperative changes of the refraction (myopisation with almost -1D).
