Objective

The aim of this paper was to compare the histopathological results of eyes enucleated due to retinoblastoma with and without primary chemotherapy.

Methods

We evaluated two groups of patients, treated for retinoblastoma in Department of Ophthalmology, Jagiellonia University in Krakow. Group I – 79 children treated in 1986 – 1995 without chemoreduction, group II – 30 children treated in 1996 – 2005 with chemoreduction. There were unilateral and bilateral cases in both groups. We analyzed age at diagnosis, first symptoms, family history, stage of tumor according to Reese – Ellsworth classification, methods of treatment and compared histopathological outcomes of enucleated eyeballs in both groups.

Results

The histopathological results according to Grabowski – Abramson classification are much better in group treated with chemoreduction.
