Objective
To evaluate the postoperative outcomes in patients with cataract surgery and uveitis.
Methods
The retrospective study comprised of 35 eyes with uveitis having cataract surgery. Phacoemulsification was performed in 31 eyes, while in 4 eyes ECCE was done. Postoperative evaluations were at first 2 days, 7 days, 1,3, and 6 months.
Results
There were 18 males, and 17 females, aged 14 to 72 years. Follow-up ranged from 3 to 35 months. At final follow-up 32 eyes (91%) had an improvement in visual acuity compared with preoperative levels. Giant cells were observed on the IOL optic in 13 eyes (37%). Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) occurred in 28 eyes (80%). Clinical cystoid macular edema was observed in 5 eyes, and 2 eyes required trabeculectomy with mytomycin C due to secondary glaucoma.
Conclusions
Patients with uveitis and cataract surgery have successful visual results after correct surgical timing and adequate anti-inflammatory therapy. There were no significant differences in inflammation after implantation of foldable IOLs in uveitic eyes.
