Objective

In recent years several prospective studies dealt with the therapeutical possibilities of PDT. In consideration of lesion size and its composition a differentiated scheme for the indication of PDT could be developed.

Methods

An analysis of the multiple clinical studies and metaanalysis with different grade of evidence-based quality has been performed.

Results

The results of the multiple clinical studies on PDT in AMD and the resulting recommendations for the indication of photodynamic therapy will be summarized. The critical analysis can result in a clinical algorithm for the indication of PDT in AMD. They are completed by references to safety and efficacy of PDT.

Conclusions

By the analysis of multiple clinical studies and metaanalysis of PDT in AMD an algorithm for the indication of PDT can be developed, which may facilitate the individual indication for PDT according to the recent recommendations of the DOG/BVA-PDT-commission.
