Outline

Text

Introduction: Retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) tears may develop as a complication after anti-VEGF-treatment for pigment epithelial detachments (PED) in exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This retrospective study analyses best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) with OCT based reinjection criteria after RPE tears.

Material and methods: 47 patients with RPE tears during ranibizumab therapy for progressive PED in AMD were included in this monocenter, retrospecitve study. We analyzed BCVA and quantity of injections. Mean follow-up was 81 weeks.

Results: BCVA did not deteriorated after RPE tear and during follow-up significantly (p<0.181). However, if the number of injections within the first year after RIP was less than 3 BCVA deteriorated significantly compared to patients with 3–6 or more injections (p<0.001)

With OCT-based reinjection criteria and a long term, regular examination mean BCVA was better compared to previous course of BCVA in the long term. Accordant change of retreatment strategy after RPE tear seams to be reasonable.
