Background: The negative effect of chronic rhinosinusitis on patients’ quality of life has been generally underappreciated and unrecognized. So far only few studies exist, which raise the health-related quality of life with validated measuring instruments at German-language patient collectives.

Patients and methods: Preoperatively, 163 patients were included into the study. Three months respectively 1 year after Functional Endonasal Sinus Surgery (FESS) 123 respectively 82 patients participated in the questioning. For measuring health-related quality of life we used the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test 20 German Adapted Version (SNOT-20 GAV).

Results: Postoperatively, a significant improvement of health-related quality of life was determined for all scales. Gender had a significant impact on the Overall Score (GS) and the General Quality of Life Score (ALQ) of the SNOT-20 GAV but showed no influence on the disease-specific scores Primary Nasal Symptoms (PNS) and Secondary Rhinogenous Symptoms (SRS). The age of the patients did not influence HR-QOL. The existence of comorbidities led to a deterioration of HR-QOL scores.

Conclusion: FESS leads to a significant improvement of disease-specific and general quality of life in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis.
