Text

Laminins are extracellular matrix proteins, that are involved in celladhesion and -migration and therefore also in tumourgrowth, -progression and angiogenesis. The expression of laminins in this unique tumour has not been described up to now.

On cryo and paraffin-embedded sections of 10 juvenile angiofibromas the expression pattern of the 11 laminin chains, known to date, was examined using immunohistology and immunofluorescence. Additionally a quantification of the expression was performed via oligo-array technique. Most of the laminin chains could be found perivascularly in all vessels of the analyzed angiofibromas. In contrast the β1- and α3-chain were interestingly only detected in some vessels. In colocalization studies we saw a multilayered basement membrane.

An immunofluorescence signal was also found in the stromal part of the tumour for some chains.

A great number of laminin isoforms, known to date, is differentially expressed in juvenile angiofibroma. In further studies we will focus on the examination of specific laminin receptors and differentiation of individual vascular architecture.
