Inhalt (inkl. Titel der Einzelbeiträge mit vortragender Person und Co-Autor:innen): The first presentation will focus on design and methods of the NAKO. NAKO is a population-based cohort of more than 205,000 men and women aged 20-74 years at baseline, recruited in 18 study centres across Germany since 2014. Its aims are to elucidate pathways to major chronic diseases, focusing on determinants and exposures such as socioeconomic, psychosocial, behavioral, occupational, and environmental factors; to assess regional differences; and to improve prevention and early detection of disease. It provides in-depth information on the respective risk factors, functional assessments, and diseases such as diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular, pulmonary, neuro-psychiatric, and infectious diseases. In addition, whole-body Magnet Resonance Imaging (MRI) was performed on 30,861 participants at 5 study centres. In 4-5 year intervals, all study participants are re-invited for examinations at the study centres. Since October 2018, 132,154 participants have been re-examined, including 18,707 with additional MRI examination. The third examination will start in May 2024. The programme for both re-examinations is similar to the baseline programme. Thereby, longitudinal information on changes in risk factor profiles and in vascular, cardiac, metabolic, neurocognitive, pulmonary and sensory function is collected.
In order to provide more flexible and digital means for the completion of self-administered questionnaires, NAKO is developing an App-based multi-device/surface tool for the third examination that will enable easy completion of questionnaires by the participants. This tool will be presented in the second talk.
Presentation 3 and 4 show results on the distribution of obesity-related factors within the NAKO population. While presentation 3 focuses on differences in anthropometric measures according to sex, age, and health status, presentation 4 focuses on ethnic differences in the frequency of the metabolic syndrome in NAKO.
The NAKO offers the possibility to implement additional projects. One such associated project called „SoccHealth” is conducted by the German Football Association (DFB), the German Football League (DFL), the administrative trade association (VBG) together with NAKO scientists and Saarland University. The aim of the study is to provide a better understanding of the long-term effects of high-performance sport. First results will be shown in presentation 5.
