Introduction: The 4 working groups “Statistical Methods in Medicine” (IBS-DR), “Statistical Methods in Epidemiology” (IBS-DR, DGEpi, DAGStat, DGSMP), “Statistical Methods in Clinical Research” (GMDS) and “Epidemiologic Methods” (GMDS, DGEpi, DGSMP) have cooperated since 2011 on the organization of workshops, further training events in statistics and methodology, other organizational work of the working groups, publications of workshops and scientific statements. In 2019, the 4 working groups were complemented by the cross-sectional initiative “Causal Inference” (DGEpi).

The 4 working groups and the cross-sectional initiative with their activities for the 4 scientific societies:

  • International Biometric Society – German Region (IBS-DR)
  • German Association for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology (GMDS)
  • German Society for Epidemiology (DGEpi)
  • German Society for Social Medicine and Prevention (DGSMP)

offer possibilities for interdisciplinary exchange within and between the scientific societies.

Methods: The activities of the 4 working groups comprise especially the planning and organization of topic workshops, e.g. the annual autumn workshop for statistical and methodological topics, training events, and working group sessions, e.g. as part of the annual conferences.

The aim of these events is to offer an overview of and insights into the broad portfolio of possible statistical and methodological approaches to scientists and other research staff and to facilitate the application of these approaches by offering an exchange with experts and colleagues.

The 3 statistics working groups primarily address statistical methods for the planning, conducting and analyses of clinical and epidemiological studies and statistical methods in medicine. In addition, topics of the working group “Epidemiologic Methods” also comprise other methodological aspects of studies:

  • from the field of epidemiology (bias, confounding, causality)
  • development and validation of data collection methods
  • data safety, data security and data exchange
  • quality management and data quality
  • transparency and quality of scientific reporting
  • methodological aspects of specific data bodies (e.g. secondary data, data linkage, citizen data)

The new cross-sectional DGEpi initiative focusses on methods for and applications with causal inference and professional exchange on this topic, also for lecturers and mentors.

Results: The poster gives an overview of the working groups and their speakers, topics, activities and websites as well as topics of the organized events of the last years (incl. websites with contributions) and current events offered.

The traditional autumn workshop targets statistical and methodological topics. It is jointly organized by the working groups across societies and takes place annually in November. In addition, each working group conducts its own group activities (workshops, tutorials, publications, scientific statements for several topics). Open sessions at conferences allow presenting unsolved problems or first solutions for discussion in the scientific community and getting valuable suggestions for the scientific work.

Conclusions: Based on the positive experiences with this cooperation, the working groups of the 4 scientific societies and the cross-sectional initiative of DGEpi intend to continue the cooperation. We are continuously looking for current topic suggestions for workshops and tutorials. Additionally, we share experiences how modern media can be used for the exchange on methods within and between scientific societies.
