Objective
To study sealing capacity, capsular bag changes and zonular stress during sealed capsule irrigation.
Methods
In a laboratory study sealed capsule irrigation was performed in ten pig eyes after CCC and removal of the lens. After applying vacuum, fluoresceine dye was injected in the capsular bag. Capsular bag changes were studied using the Miyake/Apple posterior view.
Results
In all ten pig eyes sealed capsule irrigation resulted in no leakage during irrigation. No visible capsular bag damage occurred. Zonular stress during application of vacuum and during irrigation was minimal.
Conclusions
In a laboratory pig eye model, application of sealed capsule irrigation resulted in a tight vacuum, no capsular damage and minimal zonular stress.
