Background and status of (inter)national research: The SEPCQ-27 is a validated instrument in English language to measure physicians’ self-efficacy in patient-centered communication, but is not validated for nurses in oncology in German until now. Research has confirmed that providers’ self-efficacy, as the confidence to perform actions on the basis of her/his communication skills, are linked to exhibiting patient-centered behaviors and attitudes. Furthermore, nurse-patient communication in oncology is an important factor potentially associated with positive outcomes for both sides, but validated instruments focusing on nurses’ communications skills are rare.

Research question and objective: The aim of this study is to translate and validate the German version for nurses in oncology, named SEPCQ-27-GER-Nurses.

Method or hypothesis: The validation study is part of the larger three-arm cluster-randomized intervention trial ‘KommRhein Interpro’ (Effectiveness of an Interprofessional Communication Skills Training for Oncology Teams) sponsored by the German Cancer Aid (DKH) and conducted at the “Centers of Integrated Oncology” of the University Hospitals of Aachen, Bonn, Cologne and Düsseldorf (CIO ABCD) from 2019-2022. Here, baseline data (T0) from n=341 nurses working on an oncology ward unit are used. Professional translation (English-German), back-translation (German-English) and pretesting were performed. Reliability analyses, exploratory factor analysis and multilevel confirmatory factor analyses are conducted to determine the validity of items within the original three-dimensional scale structure.

Results: This is work in progress. The final results will be presented at the DKVF 2022 including all important measures of factor structure, reliability (Cronbachs Alpha) and validity (CFI; TLI; RMSEA).

Discussion: It has to be tested if the German version of the SEPCQ-27 for nurses in oncology is a reliable, valid and feasible instrument to assess the self-efficacy in patient-centeredness of nurses in oncology. If so, it can be used in hospitals or other healthcare settings to assess the self-efficacy as a precondition for nurses’ patient-centered communication in oncology.

Practical implications: In the future, a specific instrument in German to measure the self-efficacy in patient-centeredness for nurses could be available.

Appeal for practice (science and/or care) in one sentence: The SEPCQ27-GER-Nurse makes a contribution to reach and measure patient-centeredness in care.
