Background and status of (inter)national research: Patient-centered communication in oncology is an important factor associated positively with patient treatment outcomes and with physicians’ well-being. Research has confirmed that providers’ self-efficacy, as the confidence to perform actions on the basis of her/his communication skills, are linked to exhibiting patient-centered behaviors and attitudes. The SEPCQ-27 [1] is a validated instrument in English language to measure physicians’ self-efficacy in patient-centered communication.
Research question and objective: Aim of this study is to translate and validate the German version for physicians in oncology, named SEPCQ-27-GER-Physicians.
Method or hypothesis: The validation study is part of the larger three-arm cluster-randomized intervention trial ‘KommRhein Interpro’ (Effectiveness of an Interprofessional Communication Skills Training for Oncology Teams) sponsored by the German Cancer Aid (DKH) and conducted at the “Centers of Integrated Oncology” of the University Hospitals of Aachen, Bonn, Cologne and Düsseldorf (CIO ABCD) from 2019–2022. Here, baseline data (T0) from n=268 physicians working on an oncology ward unit was used. Professional translation (English-German), back-translation (German-English) and pretesting were performed. Reliability analyses, exploratory factor analysis and multilevel confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to determine the validity of items within the original three-dimensional scale structure.
Results: This is work in progress. The final results will be presented at the DKVF 2022 including all important measures of factor structure, reliability (Cronbachs Alpha) and validity (CFI; TLI; RMSEA).
Discussion: It has to be tested if the German version of the SEPCQ-27 for physicians in oncology is a reliable, valid, and feasible instrument to assess the self-efficacy in patient-centeredness of physicians in oncology.
Practical implications: If so, it can be used in hospitals or other healthcare settings to assess the self-efficacy as a precondition for physicians’ patient-centered communication in oncology.
