Background and status of (inter)national research: The visiting bans in nursing homes for elderly during the Corona pandemic seem to have had negative effects on the mental and physical health of the residents [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11].

The Bavarian Ministry of Health and Care initiated the Bavarian outpatient Covid-19 Monitor (BaCoM) to provide a scientific database on the care situation in long-term care facilities during the Corona pandemic and to develop appropriate recommendations for future pandemics.

In the subproject Care of the monitor, the focus is on the psychosocial effects of the visitation bans in nursing homes during the pandemic and the resulting loneliness, e.g. due to interrupted family processes or affected social interaction, among those in need of care.

Research question and aim: The care-related aim of the monitor is to present the impact of visitation bans on the social participation, interaction, and family processes of care recipients in long-term care facilities.

Methods: The impact of the dynamic process of the pandemic on the care situation in long-term care facilities will be measured in this 3-year mixed methods registry study by semiannual follow-up surveys.

In the nursing subproject of the monitor, the study group and control group are surveyed to the phenomena of interrupted family processes, impaired social interaction and social isolation, which are based on validated nursing diagnoses [12], [13]. The study group includes care recipients with previous Covid 19 infection and the control group includes care recipients without a positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR test.

Results: The first interim results in spring 2022 show that family processes are or have been interrupted since the beginning of the pandemic in 32.8% (n=22) of the 172 included care recipients with and without previous Covid 19 infection. At 16.1% (n=13), twice as many individuals also seem to feel lonely compared with before the pandemic. On the other hand, direct verbal as well as electronic communication only seem to be a problem for very few in this cohort.

Discussion: In contrast to the results of previous studies [14], social interaction seems to be hardly affected in this sample. For now, there is also limited evidence of differences between the cohorts with positive and negative SARS-CoV-2 PCR tests in terms of psychosocial impact.

Outlook: In addition to other nursing phenomena, nursing facilities and caregivers will become a focus of analysis as the study progresses.

Appeal to practice (science and/or care) in one sentence: For following pandemics, validated concepts are needed to keep up family processes and social participation of residents in long-term care facilities even during difficult situations.
