Background: Future pandemics might pose a challenge for perinatal health care. The specific previous experiences of midwives and doctors have hardly been studied. To prepare for future pandemics, we will systematically explore obstetric care during the COVID-19 pandemic in several discussion groups lead by the Institute of Health and Nursing Science at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg.
Aim: This workshop is part of a scientific project that systematically analyses different areas of health care using quantitative and qualitative methods. The results will serve as a basis for future recommendations on health care under pandemic conditions.
Methods: At the beginning of the workshop, the participants receive information about the study, can ask questions and are asked to give informed consent. To describe the group, socio-demographic data will be collected using a questionnaire. All participants who have signed the consent form can actively participate in the group discussion. The discussion will be audio recorded. Those not participating in the discussion (i.e. missing signature) may remain in the room. On the basis of guiding questions, the burdens, challenges and risks, but also facilitating factors of obstetric care will be discussed and reflected upon, including intersectoral and interprofessional health services.
The data analyses will be carried out together with the data from other focus groups. Names and places that can be heard in the audio recording will be anonymised in the transcription. This means that statements cannot be traced back to individual persons.
Expected results: The focus group addresses interested parties on a specific topic during a workshop at a congress. It can provide an in-depth insight into the experiences of care during the pandemic through discussion and information exchange, thus providing significant insights.
Relevance: The project is part of a project funded by the state of Saxony-Anhalt to prepare for future pandemics. Preparedness is a topic that is highly relevant for all areas of care.
Conclusion: The results of the workshop can help to inform the preparation of obstetric care for future pandemics.
Ethics and conflicts of interest: We applied for a vote of the ethics committee and the vote will be available by the start of the congress. The project is funded by the state of Saxony-Anhalt. There are no conflicts of interest.
