Objectives: Complex hand injuries are often mutilating conditions which associate multiple structures defects. These traumas are challenging to manage as they require careful planning and execution of treatment.
Method: The first surgery is paramount for complete lesional assessment and achievement of bony stabilization, infection prevention and good soft tissue coverage. Postoperative management is as well an important component of treatment.
Results: Despite accurate surgery, outcomes are variable in these devastating injuries. Secondary procedures and psychological therapy can improve the patient's body image and limb function.
Conclusion: The author presents the set of principles that guides the assessment and treatment of such injuries supported by clinical cases.
