Background: In the Netherlands various tools have been developed to faciliate shared decision making (SDM), e.g.:

National guidance for the content of patient versions of guidelines and patient decision aids (PtDAs), ideally developed in conjunction with clinical practice guidelines (CPGs). This guidance fits the already existing national guidance on developing CPGs, which promotes the SDM model and the GRADE method as leading principle in recommendations on preference sensitive decisions.

PtDAs for use during consultations, the so-called “Consultation Cards”.

3.

The “Ask3Questions” campaign to provoke SDM conversations.

Interprofessional teams providing complex care, e.g. in elderly care or for patients with multimorbdiity, merge the goal setting model with the SDM model. Graphical tools have been developed to support goal talk, based on the WHO-ICF.

Target audience: Clinicians interested in implementation of shared decision making, no specific experience needed

Didactic method: Plenary presentation on innovative concepts and tools using patient cases, followed by critical questions to the audience. Small group discussions on the questions, finalised with plenary discussion based on questions from the audience, wrap up and conclusions.

Objectice: Create awareness on:

1.

the concept of SDM,

2.

innovative implementation strategies for SDM in the Netherlands,

3.

the simplicity and complexity of implementation of SDM in dailty practice.

Short introduction of the workshop chair: Trudy van der Weijden was trained as a medical doctor and certified as epidemiologist. In 2010, she was appointed as full professor in Implementation of Guidelines and SDM.Her research is about patient perspectives and patient participation in collective and individual medical decision making.
