About CTO

The scientific evolution in medical subjects is progressing rapidly, so that the results of scientific investigations and research must be published promptly. Usually, however, it takes rather long until results presented at congresses are made available in paper form to interested scientists. German Medical Science (GMS) offers an excellent internet portal, which allows to publish the results, presented at the annual meetings of the German Society of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, with only a short delay, thus making them available to a large audience.

"GMS Current Topics in Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery" (CTO) is an annual journal of the German Society of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery publishing the state-of-the-art review articles of the annual meetings of the Association in English language. The CTO journal starts with volume 3 titled "Environmental and Occupational Health Disorders" (ed. H. J. Schultz-Coulon), which has been the congress motto of the 75th Annual Meeting from May 19-23, 2004 in Bad Reichenhall, Germany. The authors of these main congress articles are internationally renowned scientists in ORL. The first two volumes of CTO entitled "Middle Ear Surgery" (ed. Klaus Jahnke) and "Lasers in Otorhinolaryngology" (ed. K. B. Hüttenbrink) have been published by Georg Thieme Verlag, Stuttgart-New York in 2004.

Selection and review process of CTO articles

CTO publishes invited review articles in English language on the main topic of the Annual Meeting of the German Society of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. The President of the Society defines a focus topic on a specific sub-area of the ENT medicine one year before the congress that will take place under his auspices. This topic is subdivided thematically; and experts appointed by the President are commissioned to prepare an overview paper for each subdivision.

Half a year before the congress, the authors submit the German-language manuscripts to the President in their original version for correction. If necessary, the President may include external expertise in the review and modification process of the initial submissions.

After completion of the review/correction phase, the manuscripts will be sent to the Thieme Verlag Stuttgart for printing. The German-language survey papers are published in a supplementary volume of the journal "Laryngo-Rhino-Otologie" (Thieme Verlag) 4 weeks before the year's annual meeting.

The English-language versions are translations of these papers, which are authorized by the authors. The English manuscripts are adapted to the GMS standards by the GMS editorial team, if necessary. The articles are published at the end of the congress year as a volume of the journal CTO.
