Abstract
Introduction: HPV involvment in histopathological and therapeutic aspects of upper aerodigestive tract carcinomas.
Methods: A retrospective study was performed in the ENT Department Timisoara on a period of 2 years (2013-2014). Biopsy fragments were processed following standard procedures.
Immunohistochemistry techniques were performed using Leica Bond- Max machine (Leica Biosystems, Newcastle uponTyne, UK). This was followed by incubation with the primary HPV16 L1 (Novus Biologicals, 8100 Southpark Way, A-8 Littleton, CO80120, mouse monoclonal CamVir1, 1: 100 dilution, incubation for 20 minutes) and HPV 18 L1 (Novocastra, Newcastle, UK , mouse monoclonal, clone 5A3, 1:10 dilution, incubation 60 minutes) antibodies.
Results: the study included a number of 48 cases sampled from patients diagnosed with upper aerodigestive tract malignancies. 29 of these had the larynx as the site of origin, 12 oropharynx and 7 were hypopharyngealneoplasms.From these cases high risk HPV types were: 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66, 68; 14 cases (29.16%) laryngeal neoplasms, 8 cases (16.16%) oropharyngeal neoplasms, 2 cases (4.16%) hypopharyngeal neoplasms. Low risk types were: LR-HPV 6, and 2 cases (4.16%) of hypopharyngeal neoplasms. Other HPV types: 26, 40, 53, 54, 55, 61, 62, 64, 67, 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 81, 82, 83, 84, IS39, CP6108 one case (2.08% ) laryngeal cancer, 2 cases (4.16%) of oropharyngeal neoplasms and 1 case of ofhypopharyngeal cancer. The other cases were HPV free.
Conclusions: After statistical analysis Pearson concluded that patients with HPV have a high risk of upper aerodigestive tract malignancy.
