Since the initial recognition by the WHO, the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) epidemics has involved thousands of people in East Asia and Canada. However, several cases have been reported in many countries around the world, including most European Countries, where local transmission has so far not occurred, except for one case in the United Kingdom. Many of the reported cases are only clinical suspicions in which microbiologial evidence of the presence of the new Coronavirus is lacking. On the other hand in Italy, in only 4 cases of 8 clinically suspected the presence of the virus has been objectively documented. We report the first case of SARS observed in Italy in which the new Coronavirus has been repeatedly detected. The patient, an Italian male recently returned from Hanoi (Vietnam), was initially treated with antibiotics to avoid the worsening of a Chlamydia or mycoplasma-induced atypical pneumonia, but subsequently developed serious respiratory insufficiency from which he recovered around the 12th day of admission. He was retained in the hospital for a 7-day quarantine, as recommended by the WHO. CoV was detected by using RTPCR test and isolated on cellular line.

AA report also the "no tradionally" characteristic of an other case, microbiologically confirmed.
