The presentation will describe the collaboration between an academic institute and service agency from the academic institute point of view. It will highlight an area of specialty of physical activity for older adults in a physical education and exercise sciences department. Students enrolled in the program are trained, in addition to their major training as physical education teachers in schools, to work with the elderly in community centers, retirement centers and nursing homes. The program includes theoretical and practical courses as well as student teaching practicum. “The aging cardio-respiratory system and typical diseases” is an example of a theoretical course and “fitness room activity for older adults” is an example of a practical course. In addition, the institute conducts applied research to provide scientific information to the service agency regarding to the optimal physical activity programs for the different populations such as demented individuals and physically impaired individuals, or regarding the optimal fitness room for older adults.
