Gliederung

Text

In cooperation with the sports department of the University of Bonn and the German Sport University Cologne, the German Gymnastics Federation (DTB) has developed a 12 week group exercise programme 'Fit until the High Age'. Its long-term core objective is keeping up independence of elderly people by maintaining functional capacities and preventing falls. The objectives are:

Short-term

  • Improvement of strength, primarily the anterior thigh muscles
  • Improvement of the subjectively perceived secureness while moving
  • Improvement of flexibility
  • Improvement of mobility
  • Reducing fear of falling
  • Motivating people to engage in further physical activities
  • To convey joy and fun while doing sports
  • The cognitively acceptance of physical activities as means of keeping up independence in everyday life

Long-term

  • Maintaining independence in every day life
  • Reduction of falls
  • To prevent or to delay the need for health care
  • Motivating people for a lifelong engagement in physical activities

The target group of this programme

For whom does it make sense? The exercise program 'Fit until the High Age' has been designed for people in their seventies or higher. Especially for older people who have not been involved in any physical activities at all or have not been doing sports for a long time. The concept bases on the need for people to stay independent in their high age. People should be able to reach the gym independently. It consists of 4 pillars: safety, mobility, strength, flexibility. The design for the exercise programme is based on

  • Conveying safety
  • Establishing strength
  • Developing mobility
  • Maintaining flexibility

Those 4 pillars are describing the goals of this exercise programme, where at large core objective is: To maintain functional capacity, independence and the prevention of falls.

Evaluation, Documentation und Distribution

The exercise programme will be evaluated by the Sports department of University of Bonn. It will be published and be distributed in bookshops. DTB has planned further educations for its group leaders to realize this exercise programme.
