Few studies have addressed the identification of HHV-8 genotypes detected in saliva in the absence of KS. Our study aimed to identify the genotypes of HHV-8 in saliva of HIV-infected Brazilians under HAART. We assayed saliva samples of 751 individuals for HHV-8 viral load and for the detection of DNA/HHV-8 fragments by nested PCR of the ORF K1 and subsequent genotyping by ABI platform. The HHV-8 viral load was detected in 106/751 (14.1%), ranging from 4 copies to 6 billion copies/µg of DNA. We obtained 33/106 (31.1%) ORF K1 sequences of 400 to 800 bp of the genotypes A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2, C3, C5, C7 and F. Additionally, 12.2% of samples were identified as subtype A and 35.3% as B and C. We found 9% of K1 recombinant genomes. However, the diversity of genotype C was striking in this group presenting previously identified circulating recombinant forms.
