Objective: To observe the clinical outcomes of the lower trapezius musculocutaneous flap in the reconstruction of the skull base defect.

Methods: There were 11 patients with skull base tumors, including 9 males and 2 females. There were 9 malignant tumors and 2 benign ones. The reconstructions were done in the same stage while the tumors been dissected.

Results: The first-stage healing was found in 7 patients. Second-stage healing occurred in 4 patients, among which 3 patients with skin necrosis in distant partial of the flaps and 1 wound dehiscence. All patients were satisfied with their functional results. The 1-year survival rate was 100% and 2-year survival rate is 50%.

Conclusions: The lower trapezius musculocutaneous flap is a useful local pedal flap in skull base reconstruction. The functional results are satisfying.
