Introduction: The objective of this study was to evaluate the hearing results of stapes surgery with 4 different stapes prostheses.

Methods: From June 2005 to October 2008, 20 consecutive patients affected by otosclerosis underwent stapes surgery and peri-operative data were analyzed. There were 12 women and 8 men in the study group (mean age, 46.6 +/- 8.19 years) at surgery.

Results: Pre-operative and post-operative hearing results after primary stapes surgery by implantation of different type of prostheses performed by the same author (P.R.) were reviewed. For the stapes surgery (10 cases with stapedotomia; 10 cases with 1/3 posterior stapedectomia) we used 20 pistons with diameter 0.6 mm: 6 Fluoroplastic Piston, 10 K-Piston-Titanium, 2 Richards Platinum Fluoroplastic Piston, 2 SMart Stapes Piston.

Conclusions: Results demonstrate that experienced surgeon in stapes surgery may achieve comparable results with different types of pistons.
