Introduction: Causal Therapies of a pathologic to high tube opening resistance in forms of chronic otitis media aim at lowering this resistance. This study in blackhead sheep examines different types of cardiovascular stents for this purpose in the Eustachian tube.

Methods: In this in-vivo study 12 blackhead sheep (12 female) the Eustachian tube were stented unilateral with 3 types (permament: CoCr, degradable: Cormeric M, Mg-stent). Beside clinical status different parameters were examined: endoscopy of the nose, the pharynx and the ear; tympanometry; after final anesthesia the cCT of the head, the pathologic examamination of the lung, ear and histology of the tube.

Results: The stenting of the Eustachian tube in blackhead sheep under anesthesia is possible without clinical implications. Clinically the individuals showed no signs of impairment over the whole examination. The tympanometry corresponded to the endocopic in vivo examinations, the cadaver dissection, and the cCT. In the nasopharyngeal part peritubal to the stented and the non-stented side no clinical alteration of the mucosa was recorded as well. The pathologic examination of the lung showed no signs of aspiration of degradable stent struts. The histologic examination showed local behavior of stent position, tissue reaction and degradational behavior.
