Background: The standard incision for parotidectomy results in a inconspicuous, but visible scar in the neck. The incision used for face lifting avoids this stigmatisation.
Methods: From 01.08.2006 though 31.07.2008 11 patients (9 female, 2male) underwent a parotidectomy via facelift incision. The patients’ age ranged from 19 to 58 years (average 38.5 years). The cosmetic results were judged by the patient and the surgeon.
Results: Even total parotidectomy was feasible via facelift incision. The limitation of the procedure is retrograde dissection of the facial nerve in revision surgery. The cosmetic result was judged as excellent.
Conclusions: Malignant neoplasms and revision surgery are better treated via the standard incision. The facelift incision is a highly valuable technical variation for parotidectomy in cosmetically demanding patients.
