Background: There is a high risk of perioperative bleeding complications in patients with advanced vascular malformations of the head and neck. Therefore the aim of this study was to assess coagulation disorders in patients with vascular malformations of the head and neck.
Patients and methods: In ten patients with vascular malformations of the head and neck haemostatic tests including prothrombin time, aPTT, fibrinogen level, platelet count, PFA-Epi and -ADP (PFA-100®), von Willebrand factor and D-dimers were prospectively evaluated.
Results: In 6 of 10 patients an impaired primary haemostasis was detected by prolonged PFA-Epi, one of these patients had a slightly prolonged PFA-ADP, too. One patient had a mild von Willebrand factor deficiency which was not detected by PFA-100®.
Conclusion: The existence of haemostatic disorders should be considered in the perioperative treatment of patients with vascular malformations of the head and neck.
